On Monday night, Australian Coptic Heritage and Community Services met with the Reverend Fred Nile and his wife Silvana Nero, to discuss the imminent demolition (by Marrickville Council) of the Heritage listed, first Coptic Orthodox Church in Australia and the wider Western world, namely St Mary’s and St Mina’s, located at 24A Railway Rd, Sydenham.

The reverend Fred Nile who holds the balance of power in State Parliament, along with Paul Green, was gracious in offering his support to the Australian Coptic community and committed to raising this issue with all levels of parliament, including bringing it to the attention of Mike Baird. The Reverend Fred Nile, in his own words, stated in disbelief: “this is unacceptable, no Church should ever be demolished, especially this Church, as it is of valuable significance to both Australian and Coptic history, it is a sacred place, this is simply unacceptable and I will certainly be raising this with parliament.”

Thank you Reverend Nile, your support is invaluable to us. The Australian Coptic community thanks you immensely.
